Three days and three nights in Munich

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Three days and three nights in this city, and I agree that it must be one of the most livable cities in Germany, if not Europe! I loved walking around the Marienplatz…watching people shop and eat and sell fruit stop and listen to street music…it is so vibrant and alive! Of course, one must visit the Hofbräuhaus… I drank my first and last liter of beer there in the picturesque Bier Garten. Perhaps the best place in Munich to spend an afternoon is in the English Garten (Munich’s Central Park.) I walked by surfers and marvelled at the fact that they surf in such freezing water in the downtown of a major city.
Another must in the English Garten is a stop at the Chinese Tower. My friends and I sat in this large 6,000 seat picnic area/ bier garten— complete with huge beers and lots of laugther and music and people speaking all kinds of languages. This city is so pedestrian and bicycle friendly that exploring it is a treat! I know I will be back someday… Tchüss, München!

How to meet people in Munich

How to meet people in Munich:

If you are in your mid-20s-30s and are traveling in Munich, it can be somewhat overwhelming to try and meet new people. But do not fear, that’s what the beer gardens are for! The ambiance in these places is fantastic, people are singing, dancing around, cheering, and of course, drinking lots of beer (and most of the time it’s huge 1 liter glasses!). The best is to find a table with people who look like fun and you just plop down next to them, introduce yourself, and get ready for a fantastic evening meeting new people and experiencing a very traditional Munich festivity! You can either sit inside or outside, but no matter where you go, you are sure to have an excellent time! Bring your dancing shoes because whoever you meet might want to take you out dancing once you’ve finished at the beer garden!

First stay in Munich

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

I am from Delware on the East Coast of the United States. This is the first time I have visited Munich or Germany. I arrived today after visiting Interlaken in Switzland. We took a very long train ride to Munich that lasted almost seven hours. We finally arrived in Munich and checked into our wonderful Hotel Monaco. Then, I ate knockwerst for the first time for dinner and it was delicious. We then walked to a park and saw many people in the beer garden having a wonderful time. We then walked to the center of town and saw the outside of many churches and the Glockenspiel. Tomorrow, I hope to see the insides on the churches and go up in the towers of some. Also, I hope to bike around the city and see the toy museum. Additionally, we plan on listening and seeing the Glockenspiel time at 17:00 before heading to the Hofbraehaus for dinner. Sadly, the next day, we will leave Munich to go and see the castles and then head to Austria for more sight seeing.

Beergardens in Munich

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Since munich is the city built on beer. I decided to take a few days to discover some of the beergardens in the area.
Near the Hofbräuhaus is Weisses Bräuhaus, claiming to serve the best Weissbier round.
This is an unfiltered wheat beer, very refreshing on a hot day. It is popular whith tourists and has a food menu in english. There is also a good selection of beers. Some of them stronger, than what we are used, to so be warned. They have a nice veggie platte here for nine fifty euros.
The Spatenhaus is located near the opers and you can sit in the sidewalk cafe while enjoying your meal or eat inside.
The price is a little higher, but the quality is good. I like the pork cutlet served in a pan with veggies.
The name Spaten means spade and is trademark of the brewery.
I finally ended up in the large Augustiner Biergarten, located a few blocks from the hauptbahnhof.
This is the place to be on a fine evening and mostly visited by locals, The beer is said, to be the best.
