Survival in Munich on a hot summer day

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

It was an extremely warm day here in Munich. How to survive? Then we discovered  the river Eisbach! This river divides into small and rapid sidestreams flowing trough  Englisher Garten.  We saw a lot of mostly young people (and some sporty grownup-people) jumping into the streams and they were carreid away rapidly and we lost sight of them! Did they ever get back to their starting point?  Oh yes. We saw them strolling around in the park afterwords, probably on their way back to their clothes and belongings. It looked very exiting and thrilling. Unfortunately we had not brought our swimmingsuites then, but next time in a overheated Munich we surelywill try these “watergates”.
We seriously recommend to try this happening, especially after an exhausting day in the shoppingstreets.
In the evening it is very nice to sit outside in the courtyard of the royal palace, named Brunnenhof. It is situated approximately three hundred meters north of Marienplatz. There are often concerts in the summer.

Munich, a lovely relaxing place

Friday, July 24th, 2009

As soon as we entered the reception area of hotel monaco we we’re greeted by the lovely Christine. She was so friendly, answered all of our questions and then showed us to our room. The room we reserved was a double with a shared bathroom. Surprisingly the room was larger than I had expected and it was also at the back of the building like we had requested as my husband and I are light sleepers. Simple, clean and quiet, the room ticked all the boxes for us, and the price was fantastic too.The hotel has a homely feel to it and I just love all the picture frames on the wall next to the stairs! The breakfast is amazing, there’s so much on offer and it’s all served in  bright and airy room filled with flower’s.

Munich is an amazing place to visit. My husband and I travelled all round town and saw the main square with the old and new town halls. We walked around the delicious Vitualienmarkt market with all it’s fantasic colours and smells. Here we stopped for lunch and a beer in the garden which is covered by many old oak tree’s. It’s a lovely place to take a break from all the sight seeing. After this we took the train to the English Garden. It was 30 degrees so walking by the river that runs through the park was just perfect, so cool and shady on a hot day! To end the day we headed for the famous beer hall the Hofbrauhaus. It was rather packed inside but the atmosphere was great. We really enjoyed the band which ws playing so we took a drink before heading back to the hotel.

All in all Munich was a lovely relaxing place to visit. We look forward to returning again!

Thanks Christine.

Munich, when I was a young man

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Years and years ago, as a very young man, I came to Munich on a holiday.  Like today, it was after I had been on the road for a long time, and I was ready, longing for a rest.  I found an ancient pension just east of the English Garden, and stayed there for almost a month, sharing a room with a Canadian from Nun’s Island.

The other residents at the pension were mostly fashion models, men from Southern California and women from South London who did catalog work.  I had never thought of Munich as a fashion center.  Paris?  Milan?  Sure.  But Munich?  Who’d have thought of it!  But there they were, a dozen models primping and preening, smoking cigarettes, eating spaghetti carbonara at the restaurant next door, and speaking no German at all.

I was the youngest person at the pension, desperate to be older and more popular.  So I did my best to live just like those models, so that maybe one of the women would notice me, and then I would feel like a big man.  I smoked cigarettes, ate spaghetti carbonara at the restaurant next door, and though I had studied German in college I spoke hardly anything but English while I let a summer month in Munich drift by.

Needless to say, all my of efforts to be older and cooler were to no avail.  I remained exactly the same person I had been when I walked in the door of that pension for the first time.

And needless to say, I remember hardly anything of the days and days I spent hanging around, pretending to be an out-of-work fashion model.  Years later my most vivid memories of that time in Munich are: the sound of the woman’s voice in the U-Bahn that announces “Nächster Bahnhof…”; the way the Maximilianeum looms up out of the darkness when you cross the Isar at night; and one strangely glorious day when all of us at the pension went to the Chinesischer Turm and lay aside our grownup cigarettes and our fashionable coolness, just being our true silly selves, a little drunk to tell the truth, as we watched the grandmothers sit in a circle draining tankards of beer fully half the size of the small children who ran about at their feet.

Munich and the English Garden

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Today i went to the english garden. the weather here in munich has been very warm for this time of year, and it is refreshing to see the families coming  out for a picnic or to bicycle .  i can see an improvment in disposition  with myself as i walk along in this beautiful park enjoying nature at its best.  the chinese biergarden is my destination for the afternoon as i walk past the sunbathers by thr isar river , clothing optional.  i stop for an ice cream near a cool spot under a chestnut tree midway between the river and the chinese pagoda, a good spot to rest.   after some meditation on a park bench listning to the sounds of laughter and shouts of joy from the children, i proceed thward the sound of oompah band nusic directing me to a glass of cold beer. a perfect ending to a perfect walk in munichs english garden. i would highly recommend this adventure particularly if the weather is fine. dont forget to bring your sunshine smile and your suntan lotion.

Munich – Mikes Bike Tour

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Munich is a beautiful city which greets you with it’s wonderful architecture, rich history, breathtaking parks and welcoming people.  At the city center is Marienplatz, an area with beautiful architecture; many of the buildings have been rebuilt since the destruction of World War 2.  There are lots of shops, cafes and beer houses (of course!) nearby.  The most famous locale to drink beer is the Hofbrauhouse, where tourists and locals alike meet to drink the delicous local brews.  A short walk away is one of the largest and most beautiful parks I have ever seen – the English gardens.  Walking through this enormous park with manmade streams, you will see bikers and locals with dogs.  If you continue walking, you will eventually come upon the second largest beer garden in the world where you can enjoy a beer while admiring the natural beauty of the area.  I was fortunate enough to experience all of this in just one day thanks to Mike’s Bike Tour, a world-famous bike tour of munich which is full of fun.  I can’t wait to experience another day in this city!

While in Munich I stayed in the Hotel Monaco, which is ideally located near both the train station and Marienplatz.  In addition to being resonably priced, the hotel is spacious with a welcoming and most helpful staff.  The rooms are clean, and very spacious with excellent bathrooms.  Free Wi-Fi and nice breakfast are also added bonuses.  I was very impressed with the hotel and its staff and would not stay anywhere else!
