Hotel Munich glossary: Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (Bavarian National Museum)
The Bavarian National Museum (Bayerisches Nationalmusem) in Munich is one of the most important cultural history museums in Europe. The building, erected in the style of historism by Gabriel von Seidl 1894-1900, is one of the most original and significant museum buildings of its time. It is situated in the Prinzregentenstraße, one of the city's four royal avenues. The exhibits range from classical antiquity until the 1800s. The nucleus of the collection dates from the reign of Wittelsbach and was donated to Bavaria in 1855 by Maximilian II.
The main topic is southern Germany with the biggest focus on Bavaria. The scultpure collection is of international size. The building is a milestone of architecture at the turn of the 20th century. The character and appearance of the show rooms gives the museum ist own and spezial look.
