Hotel Munich glossary: Marienplatz
The Marienplatz in Munich is the centre of the town and has been since the foundation in 1158. Due to the sale of grain in former times it has the nickname “Schrannenplatz”, which means grain market in the south of Germany. In the centre you can find the statue of the Virgin Mary, from which all outgoing streets of Munich are measured. There are regular events on the Marienplatz, for example the Christmas market, the daily glockenspiel or the dance of the Schäffler, which takes place all 7 years.
