Hotel Munich glossary: Neue Pinakothek
Outstanding works of European art and sculpture from the late 18th to the beginning of the 20th century are in the spotlight of the Neue Pinakothek. One focus is on the German art of the 19th century - this collection, which goes back to the private collection of King Ludwig I, is one of the most comprehensive of all. With Thomas Gainsborough, Francisco Goya and Jacques Louis David, the Neue Pinakothek possesses celebrated portrait and landscape painters from England, France and Spain.
There is also a wonderful collection of French impressionists: Manet Monet, Degas, Pissaro and Renoir are represented with principal works. Cézanne, Gauguin and van Gogh stand for the pioneers of the modern age.
It is one of the most important museums of art of the nineteenth century in the world. Together with the Alte Pinakothek and the Pinakothek der Moderne it is part of Munich's "Kunstareal" (the "art area"). The museum was founded by the former King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1853. The original building constructed by Friedrich von Gärtner and August von Voit was destroyed during World War II. The ruin of the Neue Pinakothek was demolished in 1949. Designed by architect Alexander Freiherr von Branca the new postmodern building opened in 1981.
