Hotel Munich glossary: Residence
With the Residence, Munich owns one of Europe's most significant interior decoration museums. For five hundred years the facility in the middle of the old city was the residence and center of power of the Bavarian dukes, electors and kings. The highlight of the guided tour is the Antiquarium: the largest and most beautiful Renaissance hall north of the Alps was built around 1570 for the antique collection of Duke Albrecht V and later used as a festival hall. The 130 rooms of the Residence Munich have been filled with furniture and oil paintings, tapestries and porcelain from the best artists of their time.
In 1920 The Wittelsbach residence in Munich was opened to the public and belongs now to the finest palace museums in Europe. In the Second World War the Residenz was very dammaged trough bombing. From 1945 on reconstruction started and they tried to return as far as possible to the original locations. The ceremonial rooms, apartments, and chapels that once belonged to the rulers of Bavaria give an extraordinary opportunity to see a huge number of rooms in a big variety of styles. The Residenz gives visitors a good idea of how rulers lived in past times and how they used art and architecture as an expression of power.
Opening hours
The Residenz is open daily. Public holidays: all the buildings are closed on 1 January, Shrove Tuesday and 24, 25 and 31 December
