Hotel München Glossar: Ludwig II.

Born on  5 August 1845 in Nymphenburg Palace (today located in suburban Munich), he was the eldest son of Maximilian II of Bavaria and his wife Princess Marie of Prussia. His parents intended to name him Otto, but his grandfather, Ludwig I of Bavaria, insisted his grandson was to be named after him, since they shared a common birthday and 24 August is the day of Saint Louis, patron saint of Bavaria. He was king of Bavaria from 1864 until shortly before his mysterious death on 13 June 1886 Ludwig's death was officially ruled a suicide by drowning in the Starnberger See, but this has been questioned until today, because Ludwig was an excellent swimmer. Ludwig is best known as an eccentric whose legacy is intertwined with the history of art and architecture, as he commissioned the construction of several extravagant fantasy castles (the most famous being Neuschwanstein) and was a devoted patron of the composer Richard Wagner.
